News and notes from around the NFL

Roy Williams has more to be thankful for than most in the NFL. A month ago, before he was traded to Dallas, he was stuck in the purgatory known as Detroit. On Thanksgiving, Williams' former team, the 0-12 Lions, was shellacked by the Titans 47-10. His current team, the 8-4 Cowboys, remains in playoff contention after a 34-9 trouncing of the Seahawks.   Jim Haslett's bank account will be $20,000 lighter for cussing during a disputed play. Fined for cussing, are you kidding me? Cussing is a part of football, from Pop Warner all the way through to the NFL. The league claimed Haslett was cussing at an official; Haslett claimed he wasn't cussing the official, that he simply yelled, "get off the @#$%^&* ball."    The league also fined Patriots T Matt Light and Dolphins LB Channing Crowder $15,000 each for fighting. I'm surprised they received equal punishment since Light seemed to be the...

Presenting your 2008 NFL Turkeys of the Year...

It's that time of year. Time to honor the Thanksgiving holiday by singling out the screw-ups in the NFL, those who have fallen flat on their face within the last year -- in other words, those who deserve to be named one of our "2008 NFL Turkeys of the Year."  Anthony Brown and Greg Trippiedi of MVN Outsider have each selected their top three turkeys in the NFL, and we've also asked a group of bloggers to give us their picks for the league's top turkey.Anthony Brown's three turkeys:NFL Thanksgiving Day TV Line-UpWhat a turkey the NFL is serving on Thursday -- the 10-1 Tennessee Titans at the 0-11 Detroit Lions, the 2-9 Seattle Seahawks at the 7-4 Dallas Cowboys, and the 7-4 Arizona Cardinals at the 5-5-1 Philadelphia Eagles. Tennessee (-11) and Dallas (-12.5) are prohibitive favorites to win their games. Philadelphia is allowed home field advantage (-3) over...

NFL Stock Market Week 13:

No draft prospects on the NFL stock market this Thanksgiving weekend.  With bowl (overreaction) season on the horizon, NFL draft stock is too volatile to track.   Instead, we'll throw in an NFL coach whose moving up or down on the NFL stock market this week instead.RisersPlayers: QB Drew Brees, New Orleans SaintsIn a last ditch effort to save the season, Brees threw for 321 yards against the Packers and 4 touchdowns, including a pair of 70 yard TD passes.  He even got Marques Colston involved.  When this offense gets Reggie Bush back, it could definately make a playoff push, and Brees is right back in the conversation for league MVP.Team: Dallas CowboysTerrell Owens is still in the middle of a rough year, but he proved that his old legs can still take him deep.  Owens was the biggest factor in the Cowboys win over the 49ers, a win that...

Fantasy Football: Tuesday Waiver Wire

As Week 13 comes upon us, it is the last week of the regular season in many fantasy football leagues.  A well placed free agent addition could help get a needed victory this week, as well as have an impact in the playoffs. In this my final edition of the Tuesday Waiver Wire for the 2008 season, I'l once again give you my recommendations of who you should consider adding to your rosters this week. Quarterbacks David Garrard, Jacksonville Jaguars- Garrard threw for 317 yards last week against Minnesota, along with one touchdown and two interceptions.  He's got a favorable matchup coming next Monday against Houston, and then has a favorable looking matchup against Chicago in Week 14.  Garrard could be a sneaky plug-in for the next couple weeks, as the Bears have struggled to generate pass rush and defend the pass this season. Shaun Hill, San Francisco 49ers- Hill...

Monday Night Football Fantasy Preview: Packers vs. Saints

Week 13 of Monday Night Football brings us a possible offensive showcase in the Superdome, as the New Orleans Saints (5-5) welcomes the Green Bay Packers (5-5) to the Bayou. Here are some things to watch for tonight as a fantasy football owner. Reggie Bush Reports suggest that Bush will miss tonight's game due to his lingering knee injury.  He brings a game-breaking element to the Saints' offense and return game when he is healthy. If Bush is inactive tonight Deuce McAllister would likely start the game, while Pierre Thomas would seem likely to get some carries too.  McAllister is dealing with a knee injury himself, so that could mean more playing time for Thomas if he is limited by the injury. Bush's absence could have an effect on special teams play as well during the game.  The Packers aren't likely to be afraid to kick to any of the...

Packers-Saints Preview

In my picks for the week, I had this game a toss-up even though the Saints are favoured by two-and-a-half points. Rather than flipping a coin, I gave it to the Saints because I had already picked eight road teams to only seven home teams. Now that I have looked at the match-up in more detail, I cannot believe the Saints are favoured: on paper, this does not look all that close. That being said, there are things to consider that do not appear on the stat sheet. For instance, New Orleans has missed time with Reggie Bush, who is expected to return for this game. Conversely, most of the Packers players who are now active but have missed time are in the secondary, where the stats are great anyway. However, about half of the season so far featured defensive end Cullen Jenkins and all but last week featured linebacker...

News and notes from around the NFL

The NFL's Competition Committee will be convened for a special meeting, following the fallout after Sunday's Steelers-Chargers game. The officiating crew did not represent their brethren well in blowing another call which altered the final score. I've heard there was an exchange of $66 million which could have gone the other way if the zebras had made the correct call. I didn't see the game, but have also heard there were three other Steelers touchdowns taken off the board by the officials. NFL VP of Officiating Mike Pereira said he would do another background investigation of the officials who worked the game and I presume he means he will have their finances investigated.   Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said commissioner Roger Goodell is reinstating Adam "Pacman" Jones, who has been indefinitely suspended. Pacman could be back on the field in Pittsburgh on December 7. If Las Vegas has a line on how many more...

NFL Power Rankings, Week Twelve

1. New York Giants (9-1) The G-men ran all over the Ravens last week in a very impressive performance, which helps to make them early favorites in postseason play.   2. Tennessee Titans (10-0) Just like Ol' Man River, Kerry Collins and the Titans keep rolling on. Their average margin of victory is eleven points per game.   3. Carolina Panthers (8-2) The Panthers are very quietly having a great season. They should continue to be a force as the schedule continues heading into the postseason.   4. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-3) The Steelers defense is playing tough. If Ben Roethlisberger and Willie Parker get healthy, watch out.   5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3) Can Jon Gruden take the Bucs to the promised land again? They're playing better than their talent says they should.   6. Washington Redskins (7-3) They've dropped a few spots after losing to the Cowboys but they still have the hosses to...Read more
